Valley boys win Crawford County Invitational, girls seventh

The SV boys XC team kept their foot on the gas as they steamrolled past 22 teams to win the Crawford County Invitational on Saturday. There is no letting up for this team as Coach Freeman said, ”They just go to work each meet and get the job done”. The Crawford County Invitational is unique in that freshmen and sophomores run against each other and then juniors and seniors do the same thing in their races. Four races in all for the day, 2 for girls and 2 for boys. At the finish of each race the runners are separated by grade, with the top performers in each grade awarded medals as they go through the chute. The timing system separates them by grade level as well. This is the only Valley meet where runners are recognized for their performance based on grade level. It’s a fun way for the kids to have the opportunity to see where they stack up against athletes in their own grade. The day kicked off with the boys freshmen/sophomore race and the eyebrows for the SV coaches were immediately raised as they saw 3 Silver Creek boys go 1-2-3 in that first race. Silver Creek also claimed 5 of the top 10 spots. Their top 3 all went under 17 minutes which is not easy on the challenging Crawford County course. Valley’s junior/senior boys knew they had work to do if they were going to overcome what Silver Creek did in the first race to have a chance to win the team title. Less than an hour later the older boys got down business in their race, with Grant Brown clocking 16:13, Alan Marshall 16:48, Carson Brown 17:02, Andre Ayres 17:25 and Harry Dybsetter 18:09 to push the Hawks to an average time of 17:08 for their top 5 to beat Silver Creek's average time of 17:19. The girls, who were fresh off their 1st place finish in the Orange County Meet on Tuesday, performed well and earned 7th place out of 21 schools represented for their efforts. Freshman Addi Moffatt competed in the Fresh/Soph race, while the rest of Valley’s girls ran the Junior/Senior race. While the earlier freshmen/sophomore races were cooler, the sun came out for the later 2 races with the girls Juniors/Seniors having the hottest race of the day. Nonetheless all of the SV girls ran with a strong will and lots of determination which will serve them well in their upcoming meets. This was the first of 3 times that Hawks will run at Crawford County this season. They will be back at Crawford on October 7th for the PLAC Conference Meet and then again a week later for the IHSAA Sectional. Since the PLAC and Sectional are run on the Crawford County course this year, it no doubt takes on significant meaning for the Valley teams. Springs Valley has never won a PLAC XC Championship, girls or boys, and have only advanced one girls team and one boys team to the regionals. The Hawks are off until Thursday when they travel to Paoli for the annual Paoli Invitational. Then on Saturday they compete at the Jasper Invitational.
