Seniors Grant Brown and Alan Marshall finished 1-2 at that 54th annual Paoli Cross Country Invitational as their Springs Valley team cruised to a first place finish at the event. In all Valley runners took 4 of the first 5 places and 5 of 9 in the 8 team field. Grant Brown was the individual invitational champion taking the lead for good in mile 2 and never looking back, finishing in a course PR of 17:19. Alan led the field in the first mile, eventually giving way to Grant and finishing 2nd in a course PR of 17:38. It was fitting that Grant and Alan, who were running the Paoli XC course for the 7th and final time in their storied cross country careers, would take the field around the course and finish 1-2 with the best times they’ve ever ran there. Valley’s senior dynamic duo of Brown and Marshall couldn’t win the title alone as they had big help from their junior teammates in grabbing 5 of the first 9 places. Carson Brown who was with the lead runners for much of the way, settled in for 4th place overall. finishing in a new course PR of 18:05. Carson was just behind Crothersville’s Dirk Carter who squeezed his way into 3rd between Valley’s first 4 finishers. Andre Ayres, running the course for the first time, was 17 seconds behind Carson, which was good enough for 5th place in 18:22. Harry Dybsetter was the final scorer for the Hawks as he grabbed 9th place in 19:22. Harry’s time was over 5 minutes faster than his previous best at the same event a year ago. Freshman Dane Harris was 6th for the team and 22nd overall in 21:00. Matthew Woolsey finished in a course PR of 22:00 and was 7th for the team and 32nd overall. Keaton Thacker also ran a course PR with 26:08. Although the girls didn’t have enough to compete for the team title, the 3 that competed were impressive in their race, all finishing in the top 7. Sophie Harris, who was first for the girls, ran the course 2 minutes faster than her previous best and finished 2nd overall in 22:25. Her time was the fastest a Valley girl has ever run the Paoli course. During the race Sophie was 3rd through the first mile but worked her way to 2nd and finished only 20 seconds behind race winner Katie Hauner of Eastern. Freshman Addi Moffatt had a nice run finishing 2nd for the Hawks and 5th overall in 23:59. Keira Lynch, who is improving with every race, was 7th overall and 25:02. The girls were without the services of Jadyn Lynch and Macie Mayhew but hope to have them back for their next race. Next up for the varsity teams is the Jasper Invitational on Saturday.
