Last season's Class A Showdown championship run was so fun, the Springs Valley volleyball team decided to do it all again. On Saturday, the Blackhawks competed at Blue River Valley in one of the state's premier small-school tournaments, winning their second title in a row and they second title overall. The Blackhawks opened the day against Cowan, blowing out their 1999 State Finals opposition 25-13. 25-3. They went on to face Indianapolis Lutheran, beating the Saints 25-12, 29-27. They'd wrap up pool play with a 25-13, 25-22 defeat of Class 1A No. 5 Southwood and then beat Wes-Del 19-25, 25-21, 15-7 in an instant classic to win the championship. Leigh Carnes earned most valuable player honors for the tournament. The senior stacked up 45 kills, 39 assists, 37 digs, and two blocks across the four matches. She also had a trio of aces on 28/31 serving. Her sister Maddie joined her on the all-tournament team, throwing down an impressive 44 kills on 89 attempts while also racking up 64 assists, 52 digs, and four blocks. She served four aces in a 43/46 effort from the line. The run was a major rebound for Springs Valley (23-2, 4-0 PLAC) following its loss at Tecumseh earlier in the week. The Blackhawks will try to keep their momentum moving forward on Tuesday when they travel to Loogootee.
