It was almost perfect weather conditions for running today at the Crawford County Sectional with overcast skies and temps in the 50’s. The SV boys used the weather to their advantage and were able to advance to next week’s Evansville Regional by placing in the top 5 today at the Crawford County Sectional. In fact they finished the highest ever for a boys team at a sectional with their 2nd place finish, earning them their 2nd trip in as many years to the Regionals. The girls placed 8th today and did not advance as a team, but individually Sophie Harris and Addi Moffatt are moving on to the Regionals. The boys had never advanced to a Regional before last year and now they have done it 2 years in a row. Going in, the team knew that it would be tough to beat Floyd Central today but they gave it a good run finishing just 16 points behind them for 2nd place, 36 to 52. There were some prognosticators predicting there would be a battle for 2nd place since Floyd Central was rated so high. The prediction was a tossup for who would finish second place in the sectional with Silver Creek, Valley and Corydon all in the mix. However the Hawks quickly dispelled that myth, as they set the pace early, grabbed 3 of the top 6 places to finish 28 points ahead of 3rd place Silver Creek. Corydon was 4th with 87 points. In the boys race it was Alan Marshall leading the way for Valley with his 3rd place finish in 16:17. Alan was able to snatch 3rd place from a Floyd Central runner with a strong kick just before the line. Carson Brown was right behind in 5th at 16:21. Grant Brown was 6th in 16:22. Grant was nursing an injury from Thursday’s pep rally which may have slowed him a bit. Coach Derek Freeman said prior to the meet he hoped we would get 3 runners in the top 10, so without a doubt he was pleased with their super effort to land 3 of the top 6 places. For the first time in school history we had 4 boys go under 17 minutes in the same meet. Andre Ayers finally broke through to the 16’s with his 12th place finish in 16:55. Andre was able to make a move on several runners in the last mile which got him under the 17 minute mark. Harry Dybsetter fell during the race but recovered to place 5th for the team and 26th overall in 18:16. Freshman Dane Harris lowered his PR for the second meet in a row, going under 19 minutes for the first time in 18:39. Matthew Woolsey ran his 3rd best time ever in 21:11. Alan Marshall spoke of the team’s effort today saying, “It was a great day. We all did our jobs and left all our best efforts out on the course today. I am super proud of the team”. Grant Brown furthered the team’s work effort thought, “I think the sectional went very well for our team. Even though things didn't go as planned like Harry falling, we did our jobs. Because of that, we qualified for regionals as a team for the second time ever.” In the girls race Corydon Central won their first sectional title ever by cruising past Floyd Central and the rest of the teams with 26 points. The Springs Valley girls placed 8th. Although not the finish they wanted, Sophie Harris and Addi Moffatt will be moving on to the Regionals next week by placing in the Top 15 of those girls not advancing on teams. Sophie was first for the SV girls with a strong 19th place finish in 21:56. Addi was 20 seconds behind in 23rd place overall and a new PR of 22:17. Jadyn Lynch was 3rd for the team in 25:05 and 46th place overall. Her sister Keira Lynch was 49th overall in 25:27. Senior Macie Mayhew ran a new PR by nearly a minute to finish in 58th place in 26:25. Other than Macie who is a senior, the 4 other girls will be returning to form the nucleus of what should be a solid girls team for next season. . Sophie Harris said, “It was a little heartbreaking knowing that for most of the girls team, their season ended today, but I am so unbelievably proud of all of them. Without Macie, we wouldn't have had a complete team, and I am so happy that she joined this season. She was an important and valuable part of our team this year and I'm sad to see her go. I've ran with Keira and Jadyn for the last 6 years and it's a little weird to not have our seasons end at the same time. On the other hand, I'm ecstatic to have one more week with Addi and be able to advance to Regional with her. She's done amazing things as a Freshman, and I'm so happy that I've been able to run with her. I'm super excited for the rest of the season and for next years season. Coach Freeman summed up the day by saying. “Every one of these kids left me speechless! They work so hard, and every week, they get better and better. It's such a fun group of kids to coach. They didn't back down from anyone and beat some very very good teams and runners today. So proud of them and excited to see what we can accomplish next week. Next up for the Regional Qualifiers is the Evansville Regional next Saturday.
