Springs Valley girls mash Mitchell in PLAC opener

After a slow first quarter, the Springs Valley girls' basketball team dominated Patoka Lake Athletic Conference rival Mitchell on Tuesday, defeating the Bluejackets 55-32. The Blackhawks led just 12-10 after the first quarter, but outscored Mitchell 14-4 to take a 26-14 lead into halftime. They then eviscerated the Bluejackets 29-18 in the second half to seal the victory. Springs Valley's dominance was fueled by its efficiency on the offensive end. The Blackhawks hit 51 percent of their shots from the field and scored more than one point per possession. They got to the basket time and time again, scoring 40 points in the paint on 20-of-31 shooting. Maddie Carnes continued her strong start to the season, dropping 21 points against Mitchell. It was her fifth straight game scoring in double digits and her second in a row with more than 20. The sophomore also had nine rebounds, six assists, six deflections, and two steals. Maci Eckerty was also a force to be reckoned with. Carnes' classmate went for 12 points on five-of-nine shooting, assisting on seven other baskets and grabbing two rebounds. She also had five steals and 12 deflections. Tori McCormick had six points, four rebounds, two assists, and a block. Bella Nottger had six points with a rebounds, two assists, and a block. Leigh Carnes had six points, three rebounds, and a steal. Kynleigh Dalton had two points, two steals, a rebound, and an assist. Jordyn Land had two points, a rebound, and a block. Josie Robison and Gracie Breedlove had one rebound each. Springs Valley (5-0, 1-0 PLAC) has now won five games in a row to start the season for just the second time since 2000. The only other instance came during the Blackhawks' undefeated regular season in 2015-16. The Class 1A No. 6 Blackhawks will try to keep their run going on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at Barr-Reeve.
