Blackhawks outlast West Washington in road thriller

The Springs Valley girls' basketball team traveled to Campbellsburg on Thursday, defeating conference foe West Washington 57-50. The Blackhawks nearly went wire-to-wire against the Senators, trailing only briefly in the first quarter, but the game grew very close late. Leading 44-30 at one point late in the third quarter, Springs Valley saw its lead disappear into a 48-48 tie in the fourth. The Blackhawks' however, would persevere by closing the game on a 7-2 run. Sophomores Maddie Carnes and Maci Eckerty were the driving force behind the win. The former went for 22 points, also gathering five rebounds with three assists, three steals, and two blocks to her name. The latter scored a career-high 20 points with five rebounds — four offensive — six assists and a steal. Eckerty also hit seven of her game-high eight free-throw attempts. Kynleigh Dalton pitched in five points, four rebounds, and three assists for the 'Hawks. Tori McCormick had four points and five rebounds. Leigh Carnes had four points, four rebounds, and two assists. Jordyn Land had two points and a rebound. Josie Robison had two rebounds. The win was the sixth in a row for Springs Valley (12-1, 4-0 PLAC), the Blackhawks' second six-game winning streak of the season. It also further cemented their place at the front of the pack in the Patoka Lake Athletic Conference with only Crawford County and Paoli left to play, the Blackhawks and the Wolfpack are the only undefeated teams left in league play. Crawford County has four conference games left to play though. Springs Valley will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 28 when they compete at Eastern Greene's Toby Yoho Classic.
