Springs Valley girls defeat Eastern Greene and Tecumseh, win Pool A at Toby Yoho Classic

The Springs Valley girls' basketball team traveled to Eastern Greene on Thursday. taking a pair of victories to win their pool at the Toby Yoho Classic. The Blackhawks opened the tournament with a thorough 49-29 defeat of the host Thunderbirds. Maci Eckerty led the way with 17 points, also recording four assists, three rebounds, and two steals. Maddie Carnes backed her up with 14 points and 13 rebounds, including a career-high 12 defensive boards. Carnes also had four assists, four blocks, and two steals. Leigh Carnes had four points, three rebounds, and two blocks. Gracie Breedlove had four points, three rebounds, and two steals. Jordyn Land had four points, eight rebounds, and a block. Tori McCormick had two points and two rebounds. Kynleigh Dalton had two points, three assists, and a rebound. Kyan Green had two points and a rebound. Josie Robison had two rebounds. In the second game of the day the Blackhawks ousted former sectional foe Tecumseh 47-42. It was a tightly-contested battle. The Blackhawks led 14-6 after one quarter, but went into the halftime break up just 24-19. Their lead shrunk to four points at one point in the third quarter, then to three late in the fourth, but some clutch play late got them across the finish line in the lead. Maddie Carnes made it happen for the 'Hawks in their second pool-play game. She scored a game-high 21 points, hitting eight of her 15 shots from the field and four of her five free throws. She also had five rebounds. Eckerty had 10 points on just six shots, also tallying five assists and a steal. McCormick was a strong contributor, finishing with a season-high 10 points, three steals, a rebound, and an assist. Breedlove had three points, two rebounds, and a steal. Leigh Carnes had two points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. It was the first double-digit rebounding game of her career. Jordyn Land had one point, two rebounds, and a block. Kynleigh Dalton had three rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Springs Valley (14-1. 4-0 PLAC) secured itself a place in the prestigious tournament's top four by winning its pool on Thursday. On Friday, the Blackhawks will square off with Class 2A power Brownstown Central in the semifinals of the Toby Yoho Classic. If they can defeat the Braves, they'll be on to the championship game against either Class 2A No. 1 North Knox or Southwestern (Hanover).
