Until nearly halfway through the third quarter on Friday morning, the Springs Valley girls' basketball team trailed Brownstown Central. One of the better teams in Class 2A and winners of four straight sectional titles, the Braves had drawn first blood midway through the first quarter with a free throw and then never conceded the lead. At one point they'd led the Blackhawks by 10, later by eight, then finally halfway through the third quarter the Springs Valley offense kicked into gear. A 6-0 run gave them a 35-34 lead, then the back-and-forth began. Brownstown Central made a push, the Blackhawks responded, and at the end of the third the 'Hawks led 45-44. The Braves regained control with a 52-49 lead, then the Blackhawks got up 53-52. Brownstown Central hit a shot to take a 54-53 lead, but that would be its final basket of the game. A 7-0 run in the closing minutes would give the Blackhawks a 60-54 win. Tori McCormick was a revelation for the Blackhawks in the win. The senior went for a season-high 12 points and hit three of her five 3-point attempts.
