Springs Valley volleyball opens season with second-place finish at BNL Invitational

The Springs Valley volleyball team traveled to Bedford on Saturday, playing a trio of matches in its opening-day tournament. The Blackhawks won their pool, then lost the championship match to place second. Valley opened its day against Owen Valley, beating the Patriots 25-19, 25-16. Freshman Haylin Cave was solid in her debut as the Blackhawks' libero, recording nine digs and making a team-high 10 passes on serve receive. After a power outage the Blackhawks returned to the floor to take on Boonville, sweeping their Class 4A opponent 25-11, 25-14. Kinsey Saliba had a team-high 12 kills on just 21 attempts with three errors. Maci Eckerty led the team with 12 digs. In the final match of the day the Blackhawks fell 25-18, 25-14 to the host Stars. Saliba was a bright spot for Springs Valley in the loss, recording 12 of the team's 18 kills and making 20 passes on serve receive with just one error. Maddie Carnes also had a strong tournament, finishing with 12 kills, 46 assists, 24 digs, and eight assists across the three matches. Springs Valley (2-1) will return to play on Saturday, Aug. 24 when it hosts Wood Memorial.
