The Springs Valley girls' basketball team traveled to Leopold on Monday to take on Perry Central, falling to the Commodores 47-39. The Blackhawks went into the halftime break trailing just 20-18, but saw Perry Central push further and further ahead in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter in which the Commodores outscored them 15-11. There were few bright spots for Springs Valley on a night in which it shot 12-49 from the field and 2-12 from beyond the arc, but Maddie Carnes was one of them. The freshman finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks. She also hit all five of her free-throw attempts, leading a much-improved effort on foul shots for the Blackhawks as they went 13-15 as a team. Brynne Buchanan also finished with 13 points and hit all six of her free throws. Tori McCormick and Maci Eckerty scored five points each, Macy Hall put up two points, and Bella Nottger scored one. Springs Valley (5-6, 2-1 PLAC) has now lost five of its last seven games after starting the season 3-1. The Blackhawks will return to action on Thursday when they host Bloomfield.
