After a phenomenal freshman season, Maddie Carnes has received her first recognition on the hardwood. Last week, the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association released its All-State teams and Carnes found herself listed among the honorable mentions for the Underclass All-State squad. The mention was well-deserved, as Carnes put together a historic campaign this winter. She scored more points than any freshman in program history and the eighth-most by any player in a single season, averaging 14.7 per game to finish with 352 total. Making the feat more impressive is that she pulled it off in a very efficient manner, hitting half of her shots from the field and 46 percent of her 3-pointers. She also tied for the team lead in free-throw percentage at 66 percent on a team-high 89 attempts and recorded four double-doubles. She also led the Blackhawks in rebounds, averaging seven per game, and finished third on the team in assists. Her defensive play was stellar as well. She recorded 44 of Springs Valley’s 60 blocks this season and finished third in steals despite primarily defending in the post over the course of the season. She also led the team in deflections. On top of her individual success, Carnes also helped lead the Blackhawks to one of their most successful seasons ever. They reached 17 wins for just the sixth time since 2001, they won the Patoka Lake Athletic Conference for the first time since 2016 and the fifth time since 2001, and they won the fourth sectional title in program history to boot. In the sectional championship game, Carnes posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. With three seasons left for her to play, the sky remains the limit for her. If she can continue to improve, she could have a historic career.
