The Patoka Lake Athletic Conference decided its All-Conference boys’ and girls’ basketball teams on Wednesday. Among the 24 players selected from the seven schools, three were Blackhawks. Springs Valley’s girls’ team, which won the conference championship for the first time since 2016 this season, was represented by a pair of players. Team captain Brynne Buchanan made the cut after a superb senior season. Against PLAC competition, she averaged 10.5 points, 3.7 assists, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.2 steals per game. She also hit 11 of 13 free throws in conference play, an impressive 84 percent clip. She stepped up time and again for the Blackhawks during their title run, but she was particularly outstanding in their championship-clinching win over Paoli. Against the Rams, Buchanan led Springs Valley with 16 points thanks to a quartet of made 3-pointers. She also had five assists, two rebounds, and two steals in that game. Maddie Carnes, recently named an Underclass All-State Honorable Mention by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, was Springs Valley’s other All-PLAC honoree. In conference play, the freshman averaged 11 points, 5.7 rebounds, two blocks, and 1.5 steals per game. She was also the catalyst in the Blackhawks’ upset win over Crawford County, going for a then-career-high 24 points while hitting seven of her 12 attempts from the field and eight of 10 free-throw attempts. She also had five rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal in that game. Springs Valley’s lone representative on the boys’ team was Deion Edwards. The sophomore averaged 18.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game against PLAC competition. He was particularly good against Mitchell, putting up a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. He also hit a game-winning shot at Perry Central, connecting from just inside halfcourt to complete a big comeback. The honor is the first for each player on the hardwood.
