After a phenomenal freshman season that included Patoka Lake Athletic Conference and Sectional 63 championships, a pair of Springs Valley stars have been honored at the statewide level. On Tuesday, Prep Girls Hoops released its Class 1A All-State Teams. Maddie Carnes was named to the Freshman All-State Team and Maci Eckerty was an Honorable Mention. Carnes broke out in a big way this winter, going for 20 points in her varsity debut and rarely slowing down afterwards. She broke Springs Valley’s freshman scoring record, racking up 352 points to average 14.7 per game. She was also the Blackhawks’ top rebounder (7.0 per game), shot blocker (1.8 per game), and free-throw shooter (she hit 59 of 89 attempts to post a 66 percent mark, all team highs). She also finished third on the team in steals (1.6 per game) and assists (1.5 per game). She also stepped her game up in the postseason, going for 19 points, seven rebounds, four blocks, three steals, and two assists in Springs Valley’s sectional semifinal victory over Vincennes Rivet. In the title game against Barr-Reeve she recorded one of her four double-doubles this season, finishing with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocks. Eckerty was just as important to Springs Valley’s success this season. She served as one of the team’s primary ballhandlers and, despite her youth, she thrived in that role. She averaged 7.4 points, three rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Her defensive play was also crucial to the Blackhawks’ sectional championship run. She averaged two steals per game, but none was bigger than the one she made in the closing seconds of the sectional championship game to close the door on Barr-Reeve. The honor is the third for Carnes this offseason, coming after she’d already been named an Underclass All-State Honorable Mention by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and an All-Patoka Lake Athletic Conference player. It is the first for Eckerty.
