When the best players in the state take the field for the Indiana Football Coaches Association Murat Shrine North/South All-Star Football Classic, one of them will be representing Springs Valley. Earlier this week, the IFCA announced the rosters for the event and Griffin McGee was among the South All-Stars. The senior kicking specialist wrapped up a standout career in the fall, finishing with two All-Patoka Lake Athletic Conference selections, a Class 1A Junior All-State selection, a Class 1A Preseason All-State selection, an Academic All-State honor, and an IFCA Region 9 All-Star selection on his resume. He also holds a number of school records and was particularly productive as a senior. In his final season as a Blackhawk, McGee hit 35 of his 38 extra-point attempts and showed great improvement on field goals, hitting six of seven attempts after hitting four of nine over his first three years combined. He also hit a career-long 43-yard field goal against Perry Central and recorded his 100th career point against Crawford County. He was also an asset as a kickoff specialist. His 55 kickoffs went for 2,243 yards, a 40.8 yards per attempt average. He also had three touchbacks despite Springs Valley often opting to kick it short on kickoffs and made a pair of tackles. McGee will be just one of five Class 1A players competing for the South All-Stars and one of 10 Class 1A players in the game overall. This is the second year in a row that the Blackhawks have had a representative at the game as manager Allie Cooper was selected in 2022. It’s the first time a Springs Valley player has participated in the game since John Wilson did so in 1994 and just the fifth time ever. Other All-Star selections include Rex Willoughby (1970), Troy Pritchett (1990), and Billy Rominger (1993). The 2023 IFCA Murat Shrine North/South All-Star Football Classic will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 14th at Decatur Central High School in Indianapolis.
