The Springs Valley track and field team’s underclassmen were given a chance to shine on Tuesday at the Northeast Dubois Freshman and Sophomore Meet and they did exactly that. The boys placed second as a team, falling only to Tell City, and the girls finished third behind Tell City and Pike Central. Sophie Harris made history for the Blackhawks at the event, setting a new school record in the 3200-meter run. Her time of 13:02.0 got her name in the record book and a third-place finish. The sophomore also finished fourth in the 1600-meter with a personal-record time of 6:01. Kinsey Saliba also had a strong meet, winning the long jump with a personal-record leap of 15-0.25 while also taking third in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Springs Valley’s throwers were also excellent. Ella Meehan, Aubrey Bledsoe, and Jordyn Land swept the top three spots in the discus in that order and Meehan also won the shot put with Land finishing third and Bledsoe placing fourth. Meehan’s shot put of 35-6.5 was a new personal record. The boys had a pair of event winners, Carson Brown and Christian Hamilton. The former took the 800-meter with a personal-record time of 2:08 while the latter won the long jump with a measurement of 21-3.5. Springs Valley also got a PR from Deion Edwards, who cleared a height of 5-8 in the high jump to place third. Evan Baker finished third in both the 100-meter and the long jump, Andre Ayres placed third in the 3200-meter run, and Alex Combs was third in each of the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles.
