The Springs Valley baseball team challenged itself on Saturday, hosting one of the top 10 teams in Class 3A as Charlestown made the trip to French Lick. Ultimately it would be the visiting Pirates who prevailed as the Blackhawks fell 9-2. Springs Valley took an early lead as Konner Chase cracked an RBI single to left field in the second inning. The junior was one of just two Blackhawks with a hit in the game, going 2-4 and stealing a base. That lead would be short-lived as the Pirates would tie things up in the third, then score four runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to break the game open. The Blackhawks would score once more with Blake Buchanan scoring from third on a passed ball, but the comeback attempt would end just a few pitches later. Mavrick Land joined Chase in having a solid game at the plate. He went 2-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Buchanan, Keyton Jones, Braylon Kovas, Cole Kovas, and Jonas Hammond all went hitless, but did draw one walk each to contribute to the offense. Cole Kovas and Jones each had a stolen base as well. Cole Kovas got the start on the mound, going 3.1 innings and allowing five runs, all earned, on three hits, three walks, and a hit by pitch. He struck out one. Tanner Phillips followed him on the mound, throwing 1.1 innings and allowing four earned runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk. Konner Chase finished the game, throwing 2.1 innings without allowing a hit or run. He struck out three. Springs Valley (4-7, 1-2 PLAC) will try to bounce back on Monday when it travels to Crawford County.
